The Restaurant & Cafe Food and Menu

For first-timers to Pão de Canela, I am sharing my favorite dishes and recommendations, especially for those interested in tasting a few Portuguese must-try dishes.

BONUS: The restaurant also has a lovely bakery and services a brunch buffet breakfast on Sunday!

TIP: Arrive slightly before the lunch and dinner time rush to avoid waiting for a table. This place is a local favorite.

Shrimp with Garlic and Chilli

An essential appetizer from the menu is the succulent shrimp with garlic and chili sauce. The freshness of the seafood shines through, reflecting the local availability and quality of the catch. It's also best savored alongside a glass of white wine—or red, if your palate seeks a rebellious twist.

Pulled Pork

In every nation, a distinct take on fries paired with egg or meat emerges. Lisbon adds its touch, where numerous eateries serve up meat, a fried egg, and fries, adorned with an array of green embellishments or a dash of oregano. This dish perfectly fits those in pursuit of a form of dirty deliciousness to savor.

Lisbon Codfish

At Pão de Canela, you'll encounter a distinctive rendition of cod à Brás featuring olive farofa. If you're unfamiliar with Lisbon cuisine, sampling cod is a must. While not my personal favorite from the menu, this dish is substantial and a great choice for cod enthusiasts or those seeking a novel culinary experience.

Octopus a Lagareiro

Lisbon's culinary charm lies in the fact that nearly every restaurant or café features Octopus on its menu. Among these, the Octopus a Lagareiro at Pão de Canela stood out as a personal favorite. Its tenderness and the way it dissolves like seafood butter in your mouth is simply magic. The restaurant thoughtfully portions ideal quantities of potatoes and greens to complement this traditional dish.

The Drinks

Pão de Canela presents a diverse beverage selection, ranging from ginginha, a Portuguese berry liqueur, to classic cocktails, cold beer, and refreshing orange juice, not to mention local wine. Their drink menu is well-curated. A visit here could seamlessly transition from a relaxed happy hour to enjoying appetizers and a complete meal.

Overall

Exuding a romantic nostalgia akin to Paris, this place breathes an unpretentious charm. It's the kind of spot where you can linger for hours, much like the elderly locals who start with coffee and gradually transition to a glass of white wine paired with nuts. Parents visiting from the states will also appreciate the seamless ease of taking a glass of wine to the playground, without arousing any curiosity.

Cost

The menu offers remarkable affordability given the quality of the food served. Anticipate a range of €25 to €40 per person, depending on your appetite for both food and beverages.
