53 Tips For Traveling to Europe With Kids

Save time and effort: Essential tips for preparing a trip to Europe with Kids

Planning a trip to Europe with kids in the near future? You've come to the right place.

During my first journey to Europe with our kids, I embraced spontaneity and followed my instincts.

While it had its merits, I realized the value of consulting a guide in advance to ease the unexpected stressors that arose along the way.

For instance, I had no prior knowledge of the French dinnertime tradition, which led us to embrace street food in Paris—a convenient option for kids.

Navigating unfamiliar territories posed another challenge as I wasn't accustomed to relying on Google Maps for pedestrian navigation. Though I quickly adapted, mental preparedness would have made the experience smoother from the get-go.

When traveling with kids in Europe, it's essential to embrace a local mindset rather than approaching it solely as a typical vacation.

Instead of being consumed by lines, tourists, and crowded attractions, prioritize seeking out local parks, restaurants, and water activities to immerse yourself in the authentic local scene. Savor the ambiance with a delightful coffee and croissant in hand, truly living like a local.

Why is Europe a great travel destination for families?

Europe offers a mix of rich history, world-class museums, stunning parks, and flourishing gardens, not to mention new types of people. A trip to Europe may just be what your family needs.

Additionally, kids will learn from exposure to new cultures and languages which may spark their interest in learning a new language.

Since my oldest daughter started her own travels, she has cultivated a deep passion for exploring diverse cultures. She eagerly dives into the world of languages through her Duolingo app and has developed a special fondness for French cheese. Now, she confidently handpicks cheeses at the grocery store, crafting her own mouthwatering cheese plates.

What is the best age to travel to Europe with kids?

01 | EACH FAMILY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE IS UNIQUE

Traveling with kids presents its own set of challenges at every age level. I chose to start traveling internationally as a family after my second child turned one.

The first year of parenting often lacks sleep (unless you're among the fortunate few), so why add the additional stress of adjusting to a different time zone?

When it comes to traveling with elementary-age kids, simplicity is key. A scoop of gelato, some shopping, and a nearby park are all it takes to keep them content. Additionally, take advantage of their enthusiasm for theme parks or explore thrilling Harry Potter-themed activities in London or Lisbon.

As your children enter their teenage years, the goal is to design trips that are both educational and engaging. Museums and guided tours may pique their interest during this stage, providing valuable learning experiences. Also, every kid is different, so let them help you plan the trip!

02 | VISIT COUNTRIES THAT ARE FRIENDLY AND SAFE

When planning your trip to Europe, it's tempting to visit as many cities as possible due to their close proximity. However, keep in mind that travel time can eat into your relaxation and enjoyment. Personally, I prefer not to exceed three cities in three weeks. While my husband may have a different perspective, we strive to strike a balance.

Select destinations in Europe that ignite everyone's interest. Perhaps someone in the family is eager to savor the cuisine in Lisbon, while the kids are yearning for a glimpse into the magical world of Harry Potter in Porto.

How to plan a trip to Europe

03 | PREBOOK ACTIVITIES

Make the most of your trip by utilizing booking tools such as GetYourGuide or Viator to secure tours in advance. For a unique experience, I highly recommend considering private tours whenever possible. This approach not only saves you valuable time but also provides your family with an intimate and personalized tour.

04 | LEARN THE LANGUAGE

During our travels, I make it a point to learn basic greetings and words in the language of the places we visit. Not only does this aid in navigating our surroundings, but it also enhances the overall experience. When your children see you struggle and play around on the Duolingo app, they may feel inclined to join in and download language-learning apps, transforming your European journey into an educational adventure.

Who knows, this newfound curiosity might even stir a passion for language learning within your kids.

05 | ENGAGE KIDS IN THE CULTURE
Engaging younger kids with storybooks that delve into European fairytales and folklore is an excellent way to spark their interest in new destinations before your visit.

Once you arrive, you can bring the stories to life by pretending to be or spotting their favorite characters as you explore. Believe me, little ones absolutely adore these imaginative experiences.

06 | RESEARCH LOCAL FOODS

To ensure a tasty European adventure, I highly recommend doing thorough research on the must-try foods in each destination you visit. This valuable knowledge will not only help you steer clear of tourist traps but also instill confidence when it comes to placing your orders. Exploring new places through taste is undeniably one of the most gratifying ways to travel and immerse yourself in different cultures.

07 | DOWNLOAD LOCAL APPS & TOOLS

Google Translate, the Airbnb app, and tools for getting around. You will want to download these and get used to them before you go.

08 | CHOOSE A LIGHTWEIGHT STROLLER

In Europe, it's important to keep in mind that stairs are abundant, and not all places are designed with ADA accessibility in mind. Be prepared for situations where you might need to carry a stroller up a flight of stairs or even your luggage if an elevator in your Italian Airbnb happens to be out of order - which did happen to us.

09 | DAY VS. RED-EYE FLIGHT

When traveling from West to East to Europe with kids, we recommend opting for night flights. Spending 10 hours together on a flight can be challenging, but flying in the evening when everyone's energy is naturally calmer makes it more manageable. Don't worry if sleep doesn't come easily. Instead, stay awake as long as possible upon arrival, and by the time the sun sets, exhaustion will help everyone adjust to the new time zone.

10 | DIRECT VS. NONSTOP FLIGHTS

When traveling with kids, opt for direct flights whenever possible. This reduces the risk of lost luggage and missing connecting flights. Additionally, layovers eat into valuable vacation time. Take the plunge and choose a direct flight for a smoother travel experience.

11 | AISLE VS. WINDOW SEAT

For families with a baby or toddler, choose middle-row seats for extra space and freedom of movement. Let your little one crawl all over you and your family without worrying about bothering other passengers.

If you have kids aged seven and above, select close-together aisle seats to keep everyone together, even if it means being in close proximity throughout the journey.

How to think about packing

12 | PACK YOUR BAGS AT 70% CAPACITY

I strongly advise against packing your bags to full capacity, as it's likely you'll end up bringing back more than you anticipated.

13 | USE LARGER PIECES OF LUGGAGE

Optimize your travel with kids by opting for a large luggage piece instead of multiple bags and totes. Go big and minimize the hassle of pushing or carrying multiple items.

14 | INVEST IN LUGGAGE THAT WON’T BREAK

Invest in quality luggage to avoid stressful mishaps. I remember when my diaper backpack zipper broke in an immigration line, leading to a chaotic scene with everything spilling out. It was a moment I never want to repeat. So, don't hesitate to spend a bit more for peace of mind.

15 | BACKPACK VS. LARGE TOTE

I switched from a backpack to a large tote that sits on my rolling bag. Backpacks can be tricky to navigate with their numerous compartments. With a spacious tote, it's much simpler to locate and retrieve items like snacks, toys, extra socks, and wipes while traveling with kids. Considering how frequently you'll need to access this bag on the plane, the convenience is worth it.

16 | PURSE VS. SLING BAG

I swapped my purse for a compact sling that holds essentials like my wallet, phone, keys, hand sanitizer, and lip balm. Instead of carrying multiple bags while chasing after kids in unfamiliar locations, I discovered that a single toddler bag, like a diaper bag, is sufficient. Opting for a mom sling is sleek, lightweight, and provides easier access. It also serves as a safeguard against pickpockets.

17 | PACKING CUBES

Packing cubes save you time and space while providing mental clarity on your family vacation. They compress and organize your clothing, freeing up mental space for a more enjoyable experience with your kids.

18 | CAPSULE WARDROBES FOR ALL

Imagine creating a capsule wardrobe for your entire family. Opt for versatile tops and bottoms that effortlessly mix and match, allowing you to dress them up or down according to your needs.

19 | AIM FOR 5 OUTFITS EACH

Whether you're taking on a three-week adventure or a shorter one-week getaway, aim to pack five outfits for each family member, considering the availability of laundry facilities at your Airbnb. If you plan to stay at a hotel, it's wise to inquire in advance about their laundry services.

20 | CONSIDER ALL NATURAL FIBERS

When traveling to Europe in the summer with kids, prioritize comfort. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, silk, or viscose. Natural fibers provide better airflow and are less prone to retaining odors.

21 | GO FOR TWO PAIRS SHOES

For summer trips, pack sneakers and sandals. In winter, go for sneakers and boots. Avoid bulky shoes. If you love platforms, wear them on the plane. Opt for your heaviest shoes for the flight.

22 | PACK SOME LAUNDRY DETERGENT

If the hotel lacks laundry service, I handwash delicate items and tops as a backup. While I try to avoid this situation when booking, I pack accordingly, just in case.

TIP: Travel with one less large luggage than the number of people in your family, allowing someone to be available for assistance. Since traveling with kids can be hectic, aim to bring one less piece of luggage than the total number of family members. For instance, if you have two adults, a 10-year-old, and a 2-year-old, with two rolling bags and a stroller, you'll have three large luggage pieces in total.

Electronics

23 | BRING A FEW CHARGING BRICKS

As you'll be capturing numerous photos and videos on your trip, your phone battery may drain quickly. Invest in a portable charging brick to keep with you and recharge your phone whenever needed.

24 | PURCHASE A UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL POWER ADAPTER

Universal international travel power adapters are fantastic for their all-in-one functionality, making them a great choice. Additionally, I highly recommend having one multi-charging power adapter for the entire family, with one person responsible for managing it, to prevent any potential mishaps.

Key things to consider for the airplane

FOOD

25 | PACK TONS OF HEALTHY SNACKS

Always have a selection of snacks on hand, particularly for the flight, as airplane food leaves much to be desired. Opt for a mix of crackers, nuts, bars, fruits, berries, and treats to keep everyone content.

26 | CHOW DOWN ON FRUIT BEFORE THE FLIGHT

To ensure proper hydration before your flight, indulge in hydrating foods like strawberries, cucumber, and watermelon. If possible, opt for a refreshing smoothie for an even better hydration boost.

27 | DRINK MILK

Here's a little-known fact: milk actually provides more hydration than water, thanks to its minerals and vitamins that aid in the body's hydration process and longevity. If possible, have a glass of milk before heading to the airport or request it during the flight to stay well-hydrated.

28 | STEER CLEAR OF THESE FOODS

If you, like me, find that spicy and fried foods often lead to undesirable after-effects, it's best to avoid them before your flight. Opt for lighter and more comfortable options to ensure a pleasant journey for you and your kids. Save the fun food for when you arrive.

29 | PURCHASE WATER @ AIRPORT

Right after going through security, fill up your water bottles and consider buying extras for the flight. Airlines may ration water, but you can bring your own supply. This is crucial when flying with kids.

30 | PLANE ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO

If you're traveling with young children, let them bring a selection of their favorite small toys. I suggest a general rule of 3-5 toys, and involve them in the decision-making process. Avoid toys however that make a lot of noise.

31 | ELECTRONICS

ipads will be your best friend when flying with kids. Yes, its a lot of screen time but a small price to pay for rest and quiet while you fly.

TIP: If you use Disney or Netflix Kids, remember to download their favorite shoes before your flight.

STAYING COMFORTABLE

32 | BRING SOME PLASTIC ZIPLOCK BAGS

During flights, it's common to accumulate various types of trash, such as wipes, tissues, food wrappings, and even diapers. On a 10-hour flight, I noticed that all the trash from my family and the surrounding seats ended up with me. To tackle this issue, I became wiser and started bringing a few large ziplock bags to neatly store and seal all the trash. When the flight attendants walked down the aisle to collect trash, I simply handed them one bag, making the process much easier.

33 | THROW IN SOME WIPES

Even if you don't have a child in diapers, it's wise to bring wipes with you. They come in handy for various purposes and can greatly enhance your comfort and cleanliness during the trip.

34 | DON’T FORGET COMPRESSION SOCKS

During a 10-hour flight from SFO to Dublin, I learned the hard way by not bringing compression socks. Age can take a toll on your body, which is why compression socks are a lifesaver during long flights with pressure changes. When traveling with kids, I prioritize self-care, as new environments and time changes can impact your body.

35 | PACK A TURKISH TOWEL OR SCARF

When traveling with kids, a versatile scarf or a durable Turkish towel proves incredibly useful. It can serve as an extra layer on the plane, transform into a picnic blanket, or double as a towel for drying off. I stumbled upon this travel hack when I instinctively used my scarf during our initial family trip, and later discovered that other family travelers highly recommended a Turkish towel for these purposes.

36 | DRESS IN LAYERS

On our first long international night flight, I overlooked the fact that the plane tends to be cooler during nighttime. It's essential to dress in layers, and I highly recommend wearing pants and a merino wool long-sleeve, even if you're traveling in the summer.

TIP: We do not travel with a neck pillow with kids because it is another bulky item to carry around. Trust me, compression socks will give you way more long-term comfort.

Jetlag tips

Adjusting to a new time zone usually takes around three full days. During the first night, your toddler or baby might wake up around 1 or 2 am. To handle this, I suggest three steps: don't overthink it, follow a routine, and ensure a comfortable sleep environment. By following these steps, we usually sleep well on the first night with only an occasional wake-up.

37 | HYDRATE

Hydration is key, so remember to drink plenty of water and even some milk. As soon as you step off the plane, make it a priority to continue taking care of yourself and ensure that everyone in your family stays hydrated.

38 | GET SOME SUN

One of the reasons I love night flights from the United States to Europe is that they typically arrive around midday, allowing ample time to spend outdoors. Daylight exposure plays a crucial role in aiding your natural adjustment to the new time zone.

39 | EAT WELL

Upon your arrival on the first day, it's tempting to indulge in fun and exciting food immediately. However, remember that nutrient-dense foods contribute to better sleep, regardless of your location. Consider visiting a local market and selecting your favorite fruits to enjoy.

40 | STAY AWAKE AS LONG AS YOU CAN

In my experience, it's beneficial for kids to take a short nap during the middle of the day upon arrival, and then make an effort to stay awake as long as possible. This approach aids in adjusting to the new time zone for everyone involved.

41 | PLAY

Having fun and immersing yourself in enjoyable activities can make time pass with more joy. The happiness and excitement you feel when playing and exploring something new upon arrival can also assist in adjusting to the time change.

TIP: If possible, give your kids a warm bath on the first night to help them calm down and adjust to the new time zone. As for parents, if you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, taking a hot shower and enjoying a cup of Camille tea can be soothing and helpful.

Where to stay

42 | Stay in walkable places

One of the most common challenges families face when traveling to Europe is navigating their way around unfamiliar places. To reduce mental strain and stress, I always suggest choosing accommodations in highly walkable areas. Since your trip is meant to be relaxing and short, this approach eliminates the need to rely heavily on taxis or public transportation, allowing you to enjoy your journey without worrying about logistics.

43 | Airbnb vs. hotel

When choosing accommodations, our top priorities are location and price. For instance, hotels in Italy tend to be expensive without always matching the value and service expected. That's why we prefer Airbnb when traveling there.

Additionally, if you prefer cooking and doing laundry, Airbnb is a great option. However, for hotel stays, we opt for full-service or resort accommodations to ensure easy access to amenities.

Staying in an Airbnb provides a more authentic "local" experience.

44 | Look for Airbnb listings with a washer and dryer

Opting for an Airbnb with a washer and dryer allows your family to pack lighter during the trip. Plus you don’t have to worry about your kids getting messy.

TIP: In Italy, it's common to find Airbnb listings that mention "2 bedrooms," but it often means one bedroom and one living space. Pay attention to this detail when making your booking to avoid any confusion.

45 | Choose hotels that offer complimentary breakfast during your stay

Both convenient and economic, find hotels that come with breakfast.

46 | If staying at a hotel, book an adjoining room

Hotels in Europe are often smaller in size, with everything scaled-down compared to the US. If you're traveling with kids, consider booking adjoining rooms whenever possible. This allows everyone to have their own space and avoids the cramped experience.

What is the best way to travel around Europe?

47 | Walk with Google Maps Get comfortable with Google maps

Ensure that your kids can walk for extended periods by practicing with hikes or walks in the park. Additionally, familiarize yourself with using Google Maps as it is a convenient and invaluable tool for navigating on foot in unfamiliar locations.

48 | Use the metro

Look into the City Mapper app to get familiar with using the metro in Europe. This is an affordable and efficient way to get around a city.

TIP: Keep in mind that many metros in Europe are not stroller friendly. If you're traveling with a stroller, consider using a sling as an alternative or choose accommodations within walking distance to avoid any inconvenience.

49 | Travel in Europe by train

The best way to travel around Europe with kids is via train. It’s affordable, fast, and a fun experience for kids. Look into Eurail for ticket information.

TIP: When traveling by train with kids, it's worth considering booking first-class tickets. The additional cost provides a bit more space and the meal options are usually quite good. The added convenience and comfort make it a worthwhile investment.

50 | Uber / Taxi

Uber apps work in many European countries. You can also use the FREENOW app, the Uber ridsharing app for Europe.

Tips on eating in Europe with kids

51 | What to expect around breakfast

In Europe, breakfast tends to be lighter compared to what most Americans are accustomed to. Traditional American breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, and breakfast sandwiches are not commonly found on menus.

You have two options: Embrace the European breakfast style or, if you're staying at an Airbnb, you can purchase eggs and breakfast items to enjoy at home. Consider adding items like eggs, yogurt, toast, cheese, and fruit to your grocery list.

52 | Dinner starts late

Dinner in Europe typically starts late, with 5 or 6 pm considered early. When flying from West to East, this is usually not an issue as you're catching up to the time change. Additionally, during summer visits, dining after sunset provides a more pleasant experience.

53 | It's perfectly fine to give a tip, even if it's not customary in that particular place.

In the post-COVID world, many tourist places have suffered financially. Although tipping may not be customary in Europe, it is warmly welcomed and appreciated. Let's be straightforward: tipping not only shows gratitude but also provides valuable support to those in the service industry.
