Caffe‘500 in Carlow couldn’t be located in a place more Irish. Diagonal from a barbering shop on Kennedy Street, where sidewalks are made of square stones, the Italian restaurant is a tasty gem nestled in Carlow, Ireland.

It’s a cafe where upon arriving, you are greeted by the funky decor of Fiat Cinquecento’s everywhere.

You feel a sense of warmth coming from the wooden furniture and flooring.

The phone rings at a steady pace for takeaway orders. You hear the sounds of men swearing in Italian, firing away pizzas in a traditional brick oven.

You open the Caffe’500 menu to find a selection of food that looks amazing. And then you realize that you are still in Carlow, Ireland, and not in Italy.

Eating at Caffe’500 Carlow

From cured meats as antipasti to cannelloni and fried pizza, you’ll find that the menu reflects the cuisine of Napoli, Italy.

One visit to Caffe’500 Carlow isn’t enough. You’ll have to make multiple trips to taste all of their pizza. Their pizza mortadella is seriously amazing!

The restaurant recently expanded its dining space with a lovely outdoor seating area. Customers can now enjoy the best Italian food and pizza in the fresh air.

The amazing pizza

One of the little know secrets to Caffe’500 lies in the pizza dough.

They make their dough in-house using a method that has a hydration of 68%. They call it “Pizza Contemporanea” (contemporary pizza), which is similar to Neapolitan, only easier to digest.

In other words, you could eat several of their pizzas without feeling over-stuffed. Just one more reason to check out the brilliant and delicious Caffe’500 menu.

TAGLIERE 500

Kick off your meal with cured Italian cold meats, cheese, and bruschetta. The mortadella was a big hit with our family.

This is not a “skimpy” appetizer. Expect lots of meat and cheese!

GNOCHETTI SORRENTINA

A lovely winter treat, the warm gnocchi covered in sauce and cheese feel like pillows of happiness in your mouth.

You can take some of the table bread to clean out all the tomato sauce from the bowl.

RIGATONI ALLA CARBONARA

This dish was the first to be finished at our table. I had to beg my daughter for a taste. It’s full of flavor and crispy pieces of ham.

PIZZA MARGHERITA

Everyone has their go-to pizza. For us, this is the pizza, Margherita. It’s light and easy to eat.

Plus, the lightness of the dough makes it easy to eat without filling up too much before your pasta arrives.

MILANO

This is a type of fried pizza, similar to a calzone, only better. Filled with mozzarella, salumi, and dried ham, you cannot find this delight at every Italian restaurant.

I advise that you order one and try to hold back the tears of joy from getting into your fried pizza.

FOCACCIA WITH NUTELLA

Finally, when you think you have had enough delicious dough, there is what I like to call a “Nutella pizza” for dessert.

A sweet everyone will enjoy.

TORTA DELLA NONNA

When I asked what the best item on the dessert menu was, the server suggested the Nonna tart.

Traditional and filled with custard and flavored with toasted pine nuts. Again, devoured in a second, I almost missed the photo moment.
